To answer the question about /etc/hosts: yes, shortcut aliases work fine there,
I use that every day.
e.g.
10.0.0.2                asterix as
allows me to type "as" anywhere (ping, ssh, kde, etc.)

Yes, that doesn't help with wildcards, so your suggested feature might have a sense.
