the answer is to middle click, or right click and choose edit. i agree that konqueror 
needs better "you are just viewing, click here to edit" type feedback in the view frame, 
but this really isn't a kedit thing. 
 
as for the backups on save option, we try and ship with safe defaults. better safe than 
lose someone's data (!)
