I'm not sure what the correct status of this issue should be right now. 
  The original version of koffice was built on my Mac with the July 
developer kit installed, but missing the August update.  In addition to 
the probelm reported here I had had problem with a non-functional kmail.

After rebuilding kmail after installing the August update I found that 
it now more or less worked, in contrast to previously when it didn't 
work at all: period.

Based on this is tried to rebuild koffice.  Right now the rebuild of 
koffice crashes and there doesn't seem to be too much I can do about 
that.  So at the moment I'm assuming that there is something wrong with 
the development environment that is messing things up and that once I 
get the rebuild to work that this particular problem with koffice 
(kword) will go away, maybe to be replaced by something else ....
