Mandrake-8.1 is now completely based on foomatic, which uses a different driver
database than CUPS (the spooler). This was not the case in 8.0 where foomatic
used the same database as CUPS. However, 8.1 comes also with a package named
cups-drivers, which may not be installed (as foomatic doesn't need it). Install
that package, then you would be able to see al drivers from the print manager
tool in the control center (KControl).

Now about KMail not being able to print, did you try to print to a file? Does
it work?
