Subject: Associations and a winelib application

I am porting an application to run as a winelib app. It currently uses
Windows mechanisms (at least ShellExecute) to initiate a Browser with a
specific url. I would like to generate the same result under linux. I am
new to KDE and Gnome, but they seem to have the association concept. What
would the right way to approach this be?
