I tried substituting 0 instead of the descr->focus_item you didn't like
for -1, and not only does it not crash, it seems to work fine. I think
that may be closer to what it should be than what I had, so if that's
okay for the 32 bit stuff, it may be the way to go. It still can't find
the modem, and I'll have to revert to send this, but that's a different
problem :-)
