The University of Chicago Library is seeking applications for a User Experi=
ence Resident Librarian to ensure that the design of websites and online se=
rvices are accessible, easy to use, and meet the needs of a diverse populat=
ion of users. This is a one-year appointment with the possibility of renewa=
l.

Reporting to the Web Program Director, the User Experience Resident Librari=
an will develop and coordinate the User Experience (UX) Program for the Lib=
rary's websites and discovery systems, and bring knowledge of user research=
 methods, current approaches to web design, and an understanding of users i=
n the context of higher education. This position will work closely with the=
 Library's web and application developers and other Library staff.

The User Experience Resident Librarian is responsible for UX testing/design=
 for a wide variety of systems and including the Library's public website a=
nd intranet, the Library Catalog, vended systems such as ArticlesPlus and S=
FX, web exhibits and digital collections platforms, and the institutional r=
epository. The position ensures that Library websites and systems are desig=
ned with a user-centered perspective that make invisible the number and var=
iety of underlying platforms a user may need to traverse.

The position manages UX testing and related activities in the Library. The =
position designs user needs/usability studies and secures necessary approva=
ls. He/she co-ordinates testing sessions, including interviews, focus group=
s and functional testing, and oversees transcription and coding of testing =
data, and undertake analysis and reporting of results.
The position provides outreach regarding UX activities, including training =
staff in user experience testing methods and standards, and presenting find=
ings and recommendations to a broad audience. The position will also conduc=
t ongoing research to identify new design trends and UX strategies.

The position contributes to open-source Library projects as a product owner=
, working with subject matter experts within and external to the Library to=
 develop feature specifications, user stories that clearly detail functiona=
l requirements, as well as coordinating development with developer team and=
 other product owners and managing product area backlogs.

The successful candidate must have a completed graduate degree from an ALA-=
accredited school of library or information science OR a relevant advanced =
degree; experience with UX/usability testing methods in an academic library=
, which may include task-based usability testing, card sorting, A/B testing=
, paper prototyping, personas, or heuristic analysis; experience with testi=
ng and prototyping tools, such as screen capture software; and familiarity =
with Google Analytics or other tools for analysis of web statistics; and ex=
perience as a product owner within an open-source project.

The search committee will evaluate the candidate's knowledge of current and=
 emerging web design practices and standards, including HTML and CSS, web d=
esign conventions, and accessibility and responsive design standards; and f=
amiliarity with web authoring tools, including content management systems. =
Candidates will also be evaluated on their organizational skills, ability t=
o itemize tasks, plan and devise timelines, and assign roles to team member=
s, and their oral and written communication skills.
