Thanks for the suggestion!

but that's very strange.
actually foldopen=all solves the problem. it works. but it's pretty extreme of 
course.
none of the other options seem to solve the problem by itself. and if i put 
all of the the document options together:
set foldopen=block,hor,insert,jump,mark,percent,quickfix,search,tag,undo
or:
set foldopen="block,hor,insert,jump,mark,percent,quickfix,search,tag,undo"

it doesn't work!

does anybody know what i'm missing?
