Thanks, I'll go this route.
(BeOS has a mime-based metadata-aware filesystem.)

I just assumed that TagLib ultimately relies on sniffing the files, 
should the extension lookup fail, or if it encountered, say, an ogg 
file with an .mp3 extension.
