OK, thanks. The SUSE homepage for SLES 8 reckons a 2.4.19 kernel. (The 
x86 specs from [1].) I'm not sure about this whole SP2 thing - that may 
have included a kernel upgrade.

If it _is_ running 2.4.19, that not only knocks SATA on the head, but 
also Adaptec 79xx SCSI controllers. Looks like this could be harder than 
  I thought......
