Perhaps I misunderstood your question. I guess you already knew about 
the blue highlighting. Maybe you didn't know about "Update if newer 
version available." Maybe you already knew that, too.

One last thing to note is that the package list display can be sorted on 
any of its columns. What I sometimes do is go to the full list (Select 
"Package List" from the "File:" pop-up and then select "zzz All," the 
last item in the package list), then do "Update if newer version 
available" and finally sort the package pane by the installation status 
column (click on the blank column header at the left). This will bring 
all the locked packages to the top, followed by those that will be 
updated (if you "Accept"), then the installed packages that won't be 
updated and finally the uninstalled packages.

The same technique works for any list of packages, whether a group or 
the result of a search.
