I have found in the past that if you don't upgrade about once a year,
you will have trouble trying to install some of the 'goodies' that may
not come with the SuSE CD's.  (and there seem to be fewer goodies coming
with every release).

For example, I am running 8.0 (gave up on 8.1) but I would like to
install Spambayes recently mentioned in Linux Journal.  Can't because it
requires a better level of python than what 8.0 brings to the table. 
Sure, I could go off and find an upgrade to python but that brings on
'upgrade hell' where you need this or that to get to this level so that
you can add that package...  It gets pretty complex really fast....

And I've always had this view of systems whereby doing a fresh install
about once a year is not a Bad Thing (tm).  It cleans house, you learn
new things...  maybe use a new package (like CUPs instead of LPRng) or
things of that nature.  And it can bring you lots of benefits with very
few disadvantages....

No, you don't need to upgrade, but doing so can be a Good Thang..(tm)
