Are you running Lilo or Grub?  If you did an upgrade as opposed to a fresh 
install, it will keep Lilo, where a fresh install auto chooses Grub, unless 
told otherwise.

I am not sure, but if it is Lilo, you may have to run the lilo command to load 
it all.  Please verify this, as I am rather a bit of a newbie, and I have 
enough people mad at me as is!
