Hi David!

Try linking /opt/kde/share/config/kdm/kdmrc to 
/etc/opt/kde/share/config/kdm/kdmrc and I think you should be able to use the 
kcontrol module again.

If you have SuSE < 8.1 I think the path ist /opt/kde3/... and 
/etc/opt/kde3/...
