That's precisely the case. I already found out myself by
examinig /var/log/maillog.

Unfortunately this is not possible. We have alias IP addresses
on the _internal_ burb with the SMTP proxy bound to them and
internal mail servers with odd ports (2525) as handoff hosts.

This was necessary because type enforcement doesn'n allow me to
do something like this:

MAILER_DEFINITIONS
Mesmtp-internal,  P=[IPC], F=mDFMuXa, S=EnvFromSMTP/HdrFromSMTP, R=EnvToSMTP, E=\r\n, L=990,
                T=DNS/RFC822/SMTP,
                A=TCP $h 2525

and then use

some.do.main	esmtp-internal: some.mail.host

in the mailertable.

Seems like TE enforces outgoing SMTP connections to go to port 25
only - weird ;-)

At this particular customer we have internal servers that use ports
other than 25 - and that cannot be changed _now_.
So I implemented this "reconnect to SMTP proxy on internal burb"
trick - the proxy finally hands of to the real server.

So it seems like I have to live with the situation that the
standby system will not be able to send mail unless we change
the entire setup and eliminate the proxies ...
