Oliver,

Try:

TCPIP> set config enable service smbd

This should set it in the permanent database. Although, I haven't had to reboot \
yet...

I'm sorry, I had not recompiled Samba. Since V1.9xx doesn't run under 7.2-1, I have \
just upgraded to 2.03 and will try this out.   
..if it makes you feel better, I am feeling pretty stupid about it now...
 
..but since I've got your attention: Why do I always need a line in the \
SAMBA_STARTUP.COM that says TCPIP ENABLE SERVICE SMBD ? Or is that a stupid question, \
too?
