[root@alaska rxtx]# ls -l /dev/lp0 /dev/ttyS0
crw-rw----  1 root lp   6,  0 Aug 31 13:37 /dev/lp0
crw-rw----  1 root uucp 4, 64 Jan 26 08:36 /dev/ttyS0

Try adding the user to group lp or whatever your distro shows above.
