Hi all,
It's embarrassing to say it but I just got Quanta4 up from SVN. Previously I
was having trouble building KDE4 on Gentoo. It's not that I couldn't do it.
It's that the build scripts and options were never just right for me and
always quirky... probably from missing instructions at 2AM. Gentoo was also
obscenely late getting out KDE4 ebuilds. By the time 4.1 came out I think they
were finally releasing 4.0. I don't have the patience to work on one desktop
and program on the other. I'm too free form and have too many things open. I'm
running openSUSE now, much as I hate RPMs and much as I would like to see how
fast I can compile KDE on my new Athlon Quad 9500 with 8 GB of RAM. Seems a
shame not to be compiling a few things, indexing a database and running Quake3
at the same time. ;-)

Anyway I just took a look at Quanta. I was both delighted and dismayed. I was
delighted because it runs and doesn't crash instantly. I was dismayed as I
didn't see hardly anything there. Two factors are significant right now. First
off I am capable of hacking code. Second, our business is finally starting to
leapfrog to our plans for obscene profits. So the option of sponsoring someone
without worrying about constant fund raising is there. Unfortunately, in this
case, I have two projects with the same needs.

I'm prepared to be the primary developer on Kommander in the short term. I use
both programs in my business, but at the moment I'm using Kommander a lot more
and suffering a lot over what it lacks in KDE4. I could hack some code in
Quanta. I'm sure Andras would same something similar. Neither of us really
have time. I have been working until sunrise and then napping a few hours
every day for the last week or more. I need these tools to make my business
work.

Niko I'm hoping you are willing and able to pick up a good portion of what
needs to be done. I'm going to put out requests for volunteer developers
shortly and I'm watching for where I feel comfortable with sponsored
development.

Some questions
1) Projects doesn't seem to see my current quanta projects. What's the deal
with that?
2) Are we set up to take advantage of the new Qt docks like Dolphin has. I
really love that system.
3) files load blindingly fast. Is the new parser being used? How can I
validate that? I don't see auto complete working.
4) Can anyone give me any status on the the present state of porting existing
features and any ideas about the challenges and opportunities for KDE4?

I will be reading the lists again. I can't give an exact time for my shift in
focus as it depends on a rather complex web of things, but I hope within a few
weeks to a month.
