I would suggest it could have been a problem with the sftp KIO Slave.  To test 
this you would open the file in Konqueror (or Kate) and see if it can open 
it, this isolates the problem from Quanta.

Quanta and most KDE applications open their files using KIO Slaves that KDE 
provides.

Anyway, you seem to have the problem under control (logging out may have fixed 
it too, or just killing a rouge processs) so I am just providing some extra 
information.
