I would suggest it could have been a problem with the sftp KIO Slave.  To t=
est=20
this you would open the file in Konqueror (or Kate) and see if it can open=
=20
it, this isolates the problem from Quanta.

Quanta and most KDE applications open their files using KIO Slaves that KDE=
=20
provides.

Anyway, you seem to have the problem under control (logging out may have fi=
xed=20
it too, or just killing a rouge processs) so I am just providing some extra=
=20
information.
