That was it. I've had klipper for ages, not changed any settings, and
when I logged into a kdm session for the first time since upgrading to
KDE 3.5.4, I was lead to (re)select my KDE preferences - maybe a new
default was set for klipper. I never touched klipper settings, but after
the upgrade, klipper's default behaviour had changed. I've since changed
it back thanks to your directions (-:.
