I tried to understand what you wrote here. :-) So, I don't know what can 
be the problem from here. If none of the characters are replaced, than 
might be worth a try to rename your local quantarc file to something 
else. Here replacing of chars works, but the old implementation had a  
list of chars to be replaced and it *might* miss some characters I did 
not know about. The new on which will be in 3.4.2 and 3.5 replaces all 
the characters that are not in the current encoding of the document.
