Well I only started in the early 90s, so perhaps I am more flexible. :)

I certainly apprieciate:

ip route add 0.0.0.0/0 via 1.2.3.4

compared to:

route add -net 0.0.0.0 nm 0.0.0.0 gw 1.2.3.4

The ip route syntax matches with modern classless subnets much better
than the old netmasks did.  And the ip route shows the routes in the
same syntax used to add and remove, route did not.  Completely different.
