If a .doc file is edited in OpenOffice Writer and inserted an image then it
will not be identified in the processCharacters method of
AbstractorWordConverter.java class.  


if ( wordDocument instanceof HWPFDocument
                    && ( (HWPFDocument) wordDocument ).getPicturesTable()
                            .hasPicture( characterRun ) )


always returns false if an image is inserted using OpenOffice Writer.
