The sequence "init 3 ; init 5" has been working since before SuSE 5.2 to openSUSE 13.1. I see no
reason why it would not work on openSUSE 12.2. If this would not work on 12.2, people would know it
and be mad complaining about it. I tested 12.2 for a brief time when it was released and I'm certain
it worked (99%). What, I have no idea.
You must have done something to break it.
I know no other way to properly restart the graphical server.
You can try ctrl-alt-backspace, twice. It is forced, fast kill.
