Yeah, odd isn't it. 

Try this: drag across two or more cells to select them, then try 
Ctl+clicking the other cells you want to group together.  Before 
releasing the control key, click on any selected cells you don't want in 
the group.

I don't know whether that is a work around or a "feature", but it works 
on my end.

(using Mandrake Linux 9.2 and OOo 1.1.1)
