XyWrite had a number of extremely useful features, but remember, it was
designed for professional writers and not for ordinary mortals or
techies. It would make me more than just a little happy if OOo would
at least attempt to introduce some of these easy features into OOo,
but, as a professional writer, my input is less important to the
developers than office users -- we are simply not that large a user
group -- yet, and, if some of these features are not introduced, never
will be.
The other thing is that XyWrite made access to some really powerful
features extremely easy to use, something that Word, WP and OOo all
miss. None of the existing word processing programs is as easy to use
as XyWrite for simple formatting or for advanced formatting. I think
part of the ease of use involves the fully programmable key set up
(easy for even a beginner to use) as well as an abundance of easily
accessible features that did not require a major hunting expedition to
locate.
Many professional writers use TeX or some varient of it, or are hoping
something like Scribus will develop into a real writer's word
processor, but, at present, we really have nothing beyond page
formatting programs (all in Windows) and typesetting programs.
