I've installed a new OpenNMS (other machine) like described here: \
http://www.opennms.org/wiki/Installation:Debian It's also an Ubuntu 10.04.
I didn't configured something in NMS. Just configured BackupExec to send traps to the \
new machine.

Here it is :-(

Hi,
how about setting up a virtual machine. Maybe VMware Player and Converter.
So you can try with a copy of your machine and a fresh new installation.
Maybe it's a faulty configuration file and you might test your installation with the \
original files. Could be hard work but you wont have to reinstall and reconfigure \
your system.

Do you have a machine from where you can manually send traps?
I've got some APC UPS which I use to send those.

Hello again,

I thought only parm[#4] is afflicted. But here is a trap from TrendMicro. Just one \
argument and it is faulty, too.

Received unformatted enterprise event (enterprise:.1.3.6.1.4.1.6101.141 generic:6 \
specific:0). 1 args: \
.1.3.6.1.4.1.6101.141="0x446572205472656e64204d6963726f205365637572697479204167656e742 \

Is there any chance to or specify the reason or repair this problem? I can't imagine \
that this is a bug. Some others would have such issues too. Without getting readable \
traps, OpenNMS is very impractical. Maybe I should reinstall it.

It's enough to drive one to despair...
I had an idea. Maybe the data in the database is correct and the gui shows crap. But \
                it isn't so. :-(

Hi Marcel,

what is your oiperating system? Which value has the LANG environement variable \

Try to change the LANG and restart opennms

I deleted the relevant *.events.xml files for testing.
Now the events are unformatted events but the information is in hex again. It must be \
an underlying problem, I think.

Received unformatted enterprise event (enterprise:.1.3.6.1.4.1.6876.4.3 generic:6 \

Does nobody has an idea?

Many trap contens look like this:

"0x42656e61636872696368746967756e67209620546573746d656c64756e6720"

I converted it to ascii and taadaaa! "?Benachrichtigung ? Testmeldung". Readable.

But what's the reason?

Betreff: [opennms-discuss] faulty trap content

Hello list,

I used this guide (http://www.opennms.org/wiki/Upgrade_Guide:_1.8_to_1.10) to update \
from 1.8 to 1.10. (Ubuntu 10.04 x86). But OpenNMS won't start.

output.log shows:
Caused by: org.opennms.core.xml.MarshallingResourceFailureException: Failed to \
marshal/unmarshal XML file while unmarshalling XML file: \
org.exolab.castor.xml.MarshalException: Invalid byte 2 of 3-byte UTF-8 \
sequence.{File: [not available]; line: 21; column: 68}; nested exception is \
org.exolab.castor.xml.MarshalException: Invalid byte 2 of 3-byte UTF-8 \
sequence.{File: [not available]; line: 21; column: 68}

I found out, that my backupexec.events.xml, at line 21 column 68, contains special \
characters like ä or ö. I changed them into an other notation like ae and ue and \
now OpenNMS starts. I used this trap definitions with NMS 1.8, too. I've heard, that \
some Java components have problems with special characters (e.g. my notifications \
can't handle ä, ö, ü or ß). Maybe the Java update to 1.6 is the problem? This is \
not a great problem for me, but maybe there is a context to the next problem.

It's definitive more a problem.
Now I get events with content like this:
0x566572617262656974756e6720626567696e6e656e2c20756d205370656963686572706c61747a20766f6e20616267656c617566656e656e204d656469656e207a7572fc636b7a75666f726465726e2e0a

But not only my BackupExec-traps are afflicted. Also VMware traps (which are included \
by default) have such content. I found out, that only %parm[#4]% is afflicted:

Any ideas what's wrong here?
