I think the difference is that nobody on the OpenBSD dev team cares about
'customer service'.  I think very few people buy the CD because they think
it's worth $40; they buy it because they want to see continued development
of OpenBSD, and most people have an easier time paying (or getting someone
else to pay) for a tangible object (the CD, or to a lesser extent a
'license') than donating $40 every six months.
