At least the latest GW 6.5 SP3 FTF takes care of the firewall issue:
Add GroupWise and Notify to the Windows firewall exception list (from
http://support.novell.com/cgi-bin/search/searchtid.cgi?/2970034.htm)

Just curious if those experiencing the Mailbox refresh issue are also
seeing Notify beat the Client with the message (which is usualy the
other way around.)

Which would make sense:

Notify it polling the POA directly to see if there is new mail, while
the client is awaiting a signal from the POA to refresh itself to show
the new messages.

If I remember this right, the "Refresh" signal is sent from the POA to
a high-port number on the workstation(?). I do notice that my W2K
workstation has that problem from time to time, but that's because I'm
testing a firewall also, and it tells me it's blocking UDP's from my POA
to my workstation.....
