Summary: Configure should support stripping output

Initial Comment:
Configure should have an option to add -s to the
libtool invocation to strip built files. Maybe a
--production or --distrib option could turn off -g (in
cflags) and turn on libtool -s at the same time.

No, I haven't given it much more thought because I really
don't know enough about Autoconf and I've been to busy to
dig in and learn it.

So I take it that you haven't found a way to fully implement
the feature request in a portable fashion?

A little feedback would be most welcome. I've changed
configure.in to do what I think is reasonable. I get
stripped programs (snmpd, snmptrapd, etc.) but not
libraries. I'm adding -s to the libtool install line but 1)
it seems to lose the -c that's there by default and 2) it
fails when I run it saying that -s isn't recognised.

My bad, I guess, libtool appears to not have a -s option:

[chrisn@eng8 ~]$ which libtool
/usr/bin/libtool
[chrisn@eng8 ~]$ libtool --help
Usage: libtool [OPTION]... [MODE-ARG]...

Provide generalized library-building support services.

    --config show all configuration variables
    --debug enable verbose shell tracing
-n, --dry-run display commands without modifying any
files
    --features display basic configuration
information and exit
    --finish same as `--mode=finish'
--help display this help message and exit
    --mode=MODE use operation mode MODE
[default=inferred from MODE-ARGS]
    --quiet same as `--silent'
    --silent don't print informational messages
    --version print version information

MODE must be one of the following:

clean remove files from the build directory
compile compile a source file into a libtool
object
execute automatically set library path, then
run a program
finish complete the installation of libtool
libraries
      install install libraries or executables
link create a library or an executable
uninstall remove libraries from an installed
directory

MODE-ARGS vary depending on the MODE. Try `libtool --help
--mode=MODE' for
a more detailed description of MODE.

A short poll on IRC came up with "--stripped". Feel free to
give it a start.

Any preference between -distrib and -prodution (-prod)? Or
some other name. Surely the name can change easily if the
structure is built but I can't finalize it without an
acceptable name.

The proposal looks reasonable. Patches are appreciated.

Now that I've touched configure.in for my PERSISTENT_MASK
request, I'd consider working on this but I'd like some
feedback from The Powers That Be about the approach.
