Summary: GDB doesn?t handle paths with spaces

Initial Comment:
When using gdb from inside eclipse (with the cdt installed) if I use a workspace path \
with spaces in it I get an error about "invalid argument"

In general, is gdb updated anymore? The version on the website is very old.

My limited understanding is there are issues with the GDB patch as it
stands stopping it being merged into the main GDB code base. I am able to
build and use cross compiled GDBs on MinGW using the released GDB code
with no patches for the RTEMS project (www.rtems.org) and have not need to
keep on top of the MinGW related patch. I do not know if MinGW needs all
the patch as it stands. An example of uncertain code in the patch is the
Al Steven's console patch which I suspect cannot go into the main GDB
source. As far as I know no paper work has ever been signed or ever will
be. I also do not know if MinGW needs this code or a tool that uses the
MinGW GDB needs this code. Then again I could be wrong about this.

Often things are like they are for a reason. It may pay to ask before
reaching a conclusion then framing it in a question. I have no time to
play with GDB on Windows at the moment or into the future. I actually work
all the time on Unix boxes developing realtime software for embedded
targets. I have provided the odd gdb snapshot when someone has found a
problem and I have time. If you wish take on GDB for the MinGW project and
can support the project better than I then please feel free to put up your
hand.

Ok so do you mean that basically parts of mingw are dead while others
aren?t?
I didn?t want to sound rude or something, I?m actually involved in
open-source software myself but I wonder what?s up with mingw, this is
THE toolchain for windows, and nobody is maintaining it. Perhaps I?ll
have a look if nobody works on up-to-date versions :)

Open source is maintained by volunteers who are interested in providing
the software. Not everyone is interested enough to provide patches. We
will support those who want to supply a working version by allowing the
package to be submitted to our download site.

We don't support your use of our software in eclipse itself even though we
support the software you can use in eclipse. We can't support everything.
There are only a few of us who actively do anything. GDB just happens to
fit the case where someone once upon a time was interested and supplied a
patched version for download but hasn't been interested enough to continue
with upgrading it and no one else has found the time or been interested
enough either.

It is open source so that everyone who is interested enough can provide
patches and support the software. I'm sorry if you feel cheated by the
fact that no one has found time to modify it. Everyone seems interested
enough to complain but no one seems interested enough to stop complaining
and supply an updated package.

As for the bug tracking system, I have recently become very narrow-minded
toward the submissions to the bug tracker. Bug reports lacking quality or
relevance to someone within MinGW actually being able to deal with a
situation will be closed or redirected to another tracker.

I don?t think this has something to do with eclipse. Apart from that
mingw is the only free toolchain which can be used with eclipse, so why
don?t you support that.
Apart from that I?ve submitted several bug reports and the only thing I
got was always "do it yourself". Why don?t you close the bugtracker at
all?

Paths with spaces are issues with most software not specific to windows.
In addition we do not support using the tools in Eclipse. Feel free to
help us upgrade the version we will accept your request to add a mingwPORT
for gdb. Please submit your gdb port to the mingwPORT submission tracker
at the SF project site. To help you get started with mingwPORT please
check our the portmaker module from CVS. Ask questions within the
mingw-users list.

Just because your antivirus software has a false positive doesn't mean
that the file actually contains a virus. It if did, Norton would complain
loudly on two of my computers.

I don't believe you. Ask AVG for support.

Other people have had the same warning about the InstallOptions.dll from
AVG in, for example, the Mozilla project. According to the NSIS project,
this is a false positive, and they claim updating your virus definitions
from AVG will fix it. See
<http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?s=b2a2a0a05af308b2bd7a4951f32bc7a5&threadid=261253&highlight=avg+virus>

Note that almost every virus checker has had a problem with some version
of NSIS at some point, some more than others. See
<http://nsis.sourceforge.net/NSIS_False_Positives>. This is probably an
inevitable situation for any lesser-known installer program.

Summary: MinGW troubles under Windows Vista

Initial Comment:
Hello. I've encountered an odd behaviour of MinGW under
Windows Vista RC1. I've experienced it both using the
standard installer MinGW 3.4.2 and installing MinGW
3.4.5 manually.

This is the relevant part of my environment:

MINGDIR=C:\MinGW
MINGW=C:\MinGW
Path=C:\MinGW\bin;C:\Windows\System32; ...

When invoking mingw32-make to build an app, the
following error shows:

mingw32-make[1]: Entering directory `C:/sip-4.5/sipgen'
makefile:29: warning: overriding commands for target `.c.o'
makefile:26: warning: ignoring old commands for target
`.c.o'
gcc -c -O2 -w -DUNICODE -DQT_LARGEFILE_SUPPORT -I. -o
main.o main.c
gcc: installation problem, cannot exec `cc1': No such
file or directory
mingw32-make[1]: *** [main.o] Error 1
mingw32-make[1]: Leaving directory `C:/sip-4.5/sipgen'
mingw32-make: *** [all] Error 2

In my latest experiment I happened to work with sip-4.5
(http://www.riverbankcomputing.co.uk/sip/download.php,
but the same error shows up with many other projects.

The interesting fact is the same projects I fail to
compile under VistaRC1, can be compiled under W2K or
XP, using the very same installation process and
environment variables.

Is anybody of the devs trying MinGW under Vista? I've
seen no bugs about this issue, so I thought it could be
useful to notify the devs of this problem.

I just experienced the same problem here. The reason for the failure is
that Vista uses a quite different MSVCRT.DLL (looks as if it has all the
security crap from Visual C++ v8 / 2005), and in this MSVCRT.DLL _access()
no longer accepts X_OK (=1) as input. The new MSVCRT.DLL is kind enough to
do OutputDebugString when it encounteres invalid arguments, which made it
very easy for me to locate the problem here.

Since MSVCRT.DLL now in the "KnownDLLs" and can no longer be overridden by
a gcc.exe.local and a private msvcrt.dll copy, I've only found two
workarounds for this problem; (1) add the `gcc -print-dump-search | sed -e
's/programs:/!d' -e 's/programs: =//'` output to the PATH, (2) rename all
MSVCRT imports in the mingw binaries to some private msvcrt copy that
works.

There are definitely a number of issues when running under Vista. Here is
a summary.

First, the "built-in" paths for binaries, includes, and libs are not being
used at all. This leads to the cannot exec 'cc1.exe' error. You can work
around this problem by explicitly adding %MINGW%\libexec\gcc\mingw32\3.4.5
to your PATH.

Once past that problem, any code you compile will not find system-wide
header files because %MINGW%\include and
%MINGW%\lib\gcc\mingw32\3.4.5\include are not being handled properly. You
can work around this by explicitly adding those paths via the -I command
line option.

Once past that problem, you won't be able to link against the system-wide
libraries and runtime files. You can work around this by copying
%MINGW%\lib\crt*.o to the build directory and explicitly specifying
%MINGW%\lib and %MINGW%\lib\gcc\mingw32\3.4.5 via --libpath.

Having done all of that, I was able to compile my project -- sort of.
There is one more big problem.

Randomly, mingw32-make.exe will fail to sublaunch tasks. The error it
prints is "Cannot fork". I work around this by building with the -i option
and then repeating the build until it manages to get everything finished.

The path problems are all probably related to each other. The forking
issue seems to be a separate issue. I could take a look if someone pointed
me to the code that is failing, but it is not immediately apparent where
the "Cannot fork" message is coming from in the sources I've downloaded.

Summary: Vista RTM issue: built-in paths not honored

Initial Comment:
There are definitely a number of issues when running under Vista RTM. Here is the \
first. Apart from a Closed issue below, I can find no references to solutions to this \
problem here or on the wiki.

The "built-in" paths for binaries, includes, and libs are not being used at all. This \
leads to the cannot exec 'cc1.exe' error when trying to run gcc.exe. You can work \
around this problem by explicitly adding %MINGW%\libexec\gcc\mingw32\3.4.5 to your \
PATH.

Once past that problem, any code you compile will not find system-wide header files \
because %MINGW%\include and %MINGW%\lib\gcc\mingw32\3.4.5\include are not being \

and runtime files. You can work around this by copying %MINGW%\lib\crt*.o to the \
build directory and explicitly specifying %MINGW%\lib and \
%MINGW%\lib\gcc\mingw32\3.4.5 via --libpath.

These path problems are all probably related to each other. I'd be happy to test \
fixes or even look into them myself if someone more familiar with the code could \
point me in the right direction.

Bug [1593268] is a duplicate of this. the cause of the problem is removal

Summary: can't compile C files >16 MB

Initial Comment:
cc1.exe crashes on large C code files >16MB.

Ok, it looks insane, however, I've got to use a tool with a macro language with \
exports C code in a single file with gets >16MB. And there is no way to make the tool \
split the code automatically.

Some notes:

* If I split the file manually (building headers what is a bunch of work for each \
export) I so can compile it, otherwise cc1.exe crashes.

* Tested on several windows boxes with w2k, winxp

* Tested with the last two mingw versions <=3.4.5

* Tested with completely different versions of large C code files.

* If I compile the same code with gentoo-linux's xmingw crosscompiler port I get it \
compiled.

* On the mailing list someone recommended to debug cc1.exe, however, right now I \
don't feel in position to do so.

* Others assumed that "native cc1.exe may be exceeding stack size set when it was \
linked".

* I was not allowed to send sample code yet. :-( However, if needed, I will try to \
produce some kind of nonsense with that tool just to produce a large file which I can \
submit here.

Thanks a lot.

Felix
