Did you initialize the ORB in your client application using an option 
like "-ORBInitRef NameService=corbaname::<HOST>:<PORT>" (replace <HOST> 
and <PORT> with your actual nsd parameters)?

If you do, orb->resolve_initial_references("NameService") should be fine.
