Works for me:
vela 1:46am mail-200407 $ host -C amfeslan.local
Nameserver ns1.amfeslan.local:
amfeslan.local SOA amfeslan.local. webmaster.amfeslan.local. 1 7200 3600 604800 1800
Nameserver ns2.amfeslan.local:
amfeslan.local SOA amfeslan.local. webmaster.amfeslan.local. 1 7200 3600 604800 1800
The most likely cause is that you have nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf that
aren't actual functional nameservers, or point to the public internet. In
both cases, "host" will not be able to find your instance of MaraDNS.
