I just tried removing kscdrc. I insert disk, up comes media manager dialog, I
select "Play", kscd starts and plays. Looking in /var/lib/mandriva, both common
and download contain /dev/cdrom as default device name.

OK in this case it has been started by media manaer with explicit URL. Let's
try kscd pure:

{pts/0}% rm .kde/share/config/kscdrc
rm: удалить обычный файл `.kde/share/config/kscdrc'? y
{pts/0}% kscd
QWidget::setProperty( "text", value ) failed: property invalid, read-only or
does not exist
 and it starts to play.

kscd cant play any audio cd. Because it search (it is configure by defaults 
like this) with : system:/media/hdc (or hdX off course)

but the good way is :
 media:/hdc 

(or hdX..)
