Hmm, you didn't say what the result of starting samba was - it looks like
removing the pid file helped.

Your smb.conf has some entries in it that could be problematic, such as:
 netbios name = <name_of_this_server>

Please backup your smb.conf, and replace it with
/usr/share/samba/smb.conf.clean, restart samba, and report if it works or not.
