The logo "Prepared exclusively for John Johnson" appears in the footer of each
page of a book ordered by John Johnson. When John's friend asks John for a
copy, John declines to illegally copy the eBook because if the eBook ends up
on a warez site or available on some site for download, it's traceable back
to John Johnson. Obviously, someone knowledgeable of PDF format and structure
could remove that footer, but personalizing is the best protection I can
think of that doesn't involve DRM. I never buy anything with DRM, so I can't
expect my customers to do so either.

One can also put an invisible secret code, traceable back to the purchase, in
the PDF file.
