I used precisely this same strategy to troubleshoot an odd LaTeX error a few
days ago. The View Source window is your friend in hunting down odd
characters, spaces, and other things (things being in the wrong environment
at the wrong time) that LyX does when copying/pasting. Regular backups are
good here. Start from the last working backup.
