Here's an update:

My printer is a HP DeskJet 710C, which I just discovered is some
sort of heinous "WinPrinter." Aaaaiiiieeee!

Luckily, I located a project at SourceForge that is developing
drivers for the HP printers that use PPA, which is some sort
of mutant animal from Microsoft or HP.

I can now print successfully using the parallel port connection
under my development kernel.

I still cannot print using the parallel port on the Belkin
ExpressBus Plus. The good news is that when I tested this,
I did get a response from the printer and it sounded like
all was going well. Then it stopped and just sat there with the
green light flashing, which indicates that the job is supposedly
still being transmitted. I don't think it is, though.

Any pointers for how to go about getting better debugging information?

Many thanks,
