I can't hear ANYTHING on my VX88 across the room, unless the fan is
running. Not even when the hard drive is accessing (unless I really
listen hard, I guess).

No, I was talking to the other laptop owner who had your problem, warning
him about the dangers of sending a laptop to sony. I sent my laptop to
sony because of intermittent failure of the touchpad (we're still trying
to clear this up... today, I send it off for the third time).

It's not usb, it's firewire. I've got a really detailed page of my
solution, which may help you (mine's aimed at Debian). Some distributions
(mandrake, I think?) just support the cdrw/dvd drive on the boot disk, but
others (like debian) don't, yet. Check

http://www.waymouth.org/john/pcg-vx88

Also, check Jack Coates' site about putting mandrake on one of these
laptops, I link to it on my site.

Not sure where to hook it into the laptop. The antenna is completely
internal. Interesting note: that on/off switch on the left side doesn't
really shut off the wireless card, it just detaches the antenna (I think).
Anyway, I find that the built in antenna on this laptop already gives me
far better reception than I could get with a PCMCIA wireless card on my
old laptop... it can access my wireless network in parts of the apartment
that I couldn't with my old laptop.
