James,

A good place to start is to check out the archives of this mailing list.  We
have has some discussion on Mandrake issues.

There (as far as I know) not anyone who have the Firewire CD stuff working.
 As for the CPU, I believe it's a hardware setting, and it should go on/off
as required based on CPU usage (and I guess temperature).  One thing, if you
still have windows on your box, you can go in there, set it to powersave
mode (750mhz), when you reboot into linux it will stay at that level.  Good
if you want a little more battery life in Linux.

No question, this laptop gets hot; i've gotten used to it.  It gets really
hot if your playing a DVD or DIVX movie.  Why it may seem a bit too hot,
this is normal.  (I believe it mentions it's OK in the manual).
