tummy.com and Kevin are proud to announce the October 2000 edition of
Kevin's Redhat Uber Distribution (KRUD). 40MB of updates this month --
more than 150 additional/updated packages in total.

Highlights include updated: OpenSSH, Enlightenment, fetchmail, glibc,
lpr, mgetty, mtr, parted, XMMS and xpdf. Added: leafnode (news server).
Also now includes kickstart files for automated installation (press "F6"
when booting from the CD for more information).

Kevin's been working on getting the 7.0 release ready, but we will be
waiting for it to stabilize a bit before KRUD 7.0 comes out. Probably
next month will be the first 7.0 release.

Every month Kevin merges in the latest and greatest errata into a standard
RedHat distribution (currently version 6.2). To fill the remaining space
on the CD, he adds a huge number of Extra packages (currently nearly
100 updated/extra packages).

What ever will you do with the time you save not having to find, download,
and apply the latest errata to your newly-installed system? Well, it *IS*
July, I would vote for the pool. ;-) A full list of packages is available at
http://www.tummy.com/krud/packages/

   Highlights:
piranha, OpenSSH, OpenSSL, OpenLDAP, aalib, bladeenc,
many CD burning-related tools, dnscache, FreeCIV, Gnapster, Grip,
GPW, jpilot, junkbuster, lftp, MSWordView, parted, rebootonpanic,
SSLWrap, Sudo, Unclutter, vacation, VNC, XEmacs

CD-ROMs available for $7US (includes domestic shipping and handling)
or a years subscription for $65US. Also available for international
orders (for an additional shipping fee).

For more information or to order: http://www.tummy.com/krud/

tummy.com -- We take the finest RedHat and turn it into KRUD.

COMMERCIAL - OpenCola, a leading North American open source development
house, announces the release of the newest version of COLAvision™ Grabber.

COLAvision™ allows users to view video that is available on the Internet
with minimal effort. It is an open-source application that assures your
privacy and respects the integrity of your machine.

COLAvision™ is made up of two applications, GRABBER AND BROADCASTER that can
be used on their own or in tandem:

COLAvision™ Grabber
Automatically collects video and MP3 files. It allows you to specify which
filetypes it should retrieve and will allow you to specify which files it
should collect or avoid based on their names, sizes, and other criteria.

COLAvision™ Broadcaster
Randomly selects video and mp3 files from a specified directory and
broadcasts them from a streaming server.

COLAvision Grabber uses Gnutellanet, the ad hoc network of computers running
Gnutella (an open-source distributed, peer-to-peer application that allows
its users to search for and exchange files.)

Through Gnutellanet, Grabber has access to a large collection of video and
mp3 files. Grabber will eventually use other file-sharing systems such as
Scour Exchange, as well as selected search engines.

From: Ed L Cashin <ecashin@coe.uga.edu>
Subject: syncotron on sourceforge: distributed, unattended sound software
Date: Thu, 12 Oct 2000 21:54:51 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

The Syncotron Bathysphere Software Suite (syncotron project) is now
hosted by Sourceforge.

    http://syncotron.sourceforge.net/

The syncotron project has three main parts:

samplomatic (stable)

The samplomatic gathers sounds from an incoming audio stream based
on an amplitude threshold. Once a sound is captured, its frequency
spectrum is analysed by means of Fast Fourier Transform. This
frequency spectrum is made available in the filename of the wav
    file that the samplomatic writes.

syncotron (pre-alpha)

The syncotron is a daemon that plays an audio stream to an audio
device, like a soundcard, while listening on the network for
commands. Commands can be sent to the syncotron from anything that
can talk its language, making the syncotron well suited to
interactive sound environments. Since it uses select-based
multiplexing, it can simultaneously accept commands from many
    sources.

syncodj (vapor)

The syncodj will be a curses client for the syncotron. It will
send commands over the network (TCP/IP or UNIX-domain sockets) to
a running syncotron so as to influence the behavior of the
syncotron. syncodj will be the way a human DJ can control, tweak,
    or nudge the syncotron.

Hiscom introduces Linux for large scale transaction processing
First Dutch Hospital on Linux

Leiden, the Netherlands, October 11,

The "Vlietland" hospital based in Schiedam (near Rotterdam) has successfully
switched over to Linux for their HIS (hospital information system) on sept 30.
After a moderate downtime of 20 minutes, the 600 bed hospital experiences the
effects of a instantaneous 600%! Increase in processing capacity which speeds up
their clinical workstation 10 times, shortens their batch processing to a
fraction and even allows them to run heavy duty management information reporting
during the day together with the transaction use of the system.

The Vlietland Hosital is the second institution switching over. In July the
Academisch Medisch Centrum (The largest University hospital in the Netherlands)
launched Linux as a database server for the patient database containing 20 years
of data about 2 million patients). At this moment seven other hospitals are
planning the same switch to this Linux-based HIS. The Linux-based HIS is a
continuation of the well known Hiscom-HIS which is used by nearly half of the
Dutch hospitals. The system has a broad range of application software: from
direct patient care to care-planning and materials logistics.

A lot of attention and effort has gone into the migration path. The huge
data-volumes of the hospitals, the uptime demands (99.97%) and number of users
did ask for a bit-compatible, instantaneous and reliable switchover. The answer
was the introduction of multi-platform executables. Programs that run as well
on VAX systems as on a Intel based Linux machine. Compiled from the same source.
Adaptations in the Hiscom DBMS made it possible to offer a bit-compatible
database on disk level. The resulting switchover thus becomes very simple:
- - Turn your current software into MPE's
- - Get yourself a Linux machine (Hiscom uses Compaq proliant servers)
- - Remove the the hot-swap disk units with the databases and programs
from your VAX machine and plug them into the Linux-"box"
- - Start up and continu working

For the Vlietland Hospital more processing speed is to follow. During the coming
weeks Vlietland guarantees a fast switchback to the VAX machines in case of any
unexpected problems by using the same disks and programs that allowed for the
transfer to Linux. After this period the data is moved to a set of fibre channel
RAID array's. This will increase the database speed about 1000%! The system then
will use one RAID array for on-line transaction processing, and will maintain a
software mirror backup in a safe location on a distant RAID array.

For more information about this Linux Implementation please contact Hiscom at
info@hiscom.nl
