Major changes in this release:
 * The trading routines are almost complete now and work.
 * Added code to handle players, town and transporters.
 * Several bugfixes.
 * htsserver now requires GLib 1.2.8 or better
 * Upgraded to autoconf 2.49a.
 * Should compile on HP/UX now.
 * Documentation updates.

Announcing Version 0.6 of the Open Source Audio Library
Project (OSALP). OSALP is an object oriented C++ library
that contains all the audio capabilty one needs to add audio
to their application. It is great for rapid prototyping, adding
audio to a non-audio application, and developing an audio
application. New features in V 0.6 include allowing one to
set the amount of buffering performed by the audio card. Also
added is a-law and mu-law codecs for the AU and WAV audio
formats. Many bug fixes have been included as well. Currently
the library is available for Linux and is in source form. It
is licensed under LGPL. It is available from:

I've written a very small "trim" utility that can be used to keep
the size of growing logfiles under a certain limit. The program
simply will delete a certain number of lines of text from the start
of a file, if the file size exceeds a given limit (e.g. use in cron).

You can download the source and a Redhat 7 i386 binary here:

Subject: CoreLinux++ 0.4.29 Released
Date: Thu, 12 Oct 2000 21:10:44 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

CoreLinux++ adds support for gcc 2.97.

General: CoreLinux++ (http://corelinux.sourceforge.net) is an initiative
to normalize methods and conventions for OOA/OOD/C++ development for
Linux, materialized in documentation, OO analysis and design models, and
a set of Open Source C++ class libraries to support common patterns,
frameworks, and exploit the C++ standards.

News: With this release we have made changes to various core library
(libcl++) module implementations to conform with the C++ standard
support extended in gcc 2.97.

CoreLinux++ uses the LGPL license to minimize restrictions on
application use and extension.

Plans: We continue to refine the newly available CoreLinux++ Abstract
Framework library (libclfw++), the most recent change being the addition
of metaclasses for reflection, introspection, reification, and
extension. Currently there is only one framework (Library Load) as the
need to define metaattributes for the metaclasses is taking priority.
The immediate extensions that will utilize these MetaType constructs
include Function Library Loading, and Persistence. We are still looking
for developers interested in contributing to this Open Development and
Open Source Software project.

Full details of the project can be viewed from our the home page at
http://corelinux.sourceforge.net where you can also download the source
and documentation.

Firedial is a bunch of shell scripts and a mini-protocol that enables you to
control a Linux Router that you have setup. It let's you check on the
router's connection, and bring it up or down.

Firedial is not a router package. It will not setup a machine to be used as
a router or firewall. This needs to be already done. All Firedial does is
bring an Internet connection up or down on a remote machine on your network.

From: Chris Cox <cjcox@acm.org>
Subject: ImPress 1.1-b5 - desktop publishing and layout package
Date: Thu, 12 Oct 2000 21:35:36 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

A few more feature adds and more bug fixes:
http://www.ntlug.org/~ccox/impress/changes.txt

ImPress is a Tcl/Tk based desktop publishing and layout package.
It also supports presentations and it can run inside or
outside of a web browser.

 To download visit:
 http://www.ntlug.org/~ccox/impress/

 Read the documentation at:
 http://www.ntlug.org/~ccox/impress/impress/doc/impdoc.html

 Here's the b5 info from changes.txt:

1.1-b5
- ------

o Pstoedit:
Modifications to support 3.21 new PNG image handling. This means
that the binary pstoedit package depends upon libpng (sorry). You
can always build it yourself :-).

Enable image handling by adding the "-i" option: pstoedit -f tk:-i ...
Requires Jan Nijtmans Img extension (with PNG support) to work.

o Http access:
Can now load documents via URL when in standalone mode.

o Macros:
Completed the Imp_RomPage macros and added the Imp_ArabicPage
macro. Anyone using Imp_RomPage expecting Arabic will find that
Roman Numerals are now functioning (sorry I released b4 with an
   incomplete Imp_RomPage macro).

Added the Imp_SavedUser macro. From now on, when you save a file,
it saves the user with it. For new files, defaults to the current
   user of course.

o Align Objects:
Added Align Objects (left, right, top, bottom, center v/h).

o EPS Support:
Seems strange, but in all the feature adds, the ability to output
pages as simple EPS files was lost. This capability has been
added. Use a %d in the file name to number the output files...
option is enabled via the Print Dialog (print to file of course).

o Fixes
   * Eliminated some redundant code (not really a fix..but nice).
   * Restore template after save.
   * Selecting with a drag-box was broken by the "disabled"
     feature....fixed!
   * Landscape deprecated. The only way to get things to rotate
properly for gv/acroread is to NOT use the landscape feature.
Let me know if you need it back...(look at the program, you'll
see where it can be renabled...not sure if works like it did
before though...really can't see the need for it).
   * Error in the DSC begin output for documents, moved the BeginSetup
so it's outside of the individual pages.
   * Eliminated border on splash screen... a priority item :-)
   * Eliminate extraneous Group variables (messes things up)...resave
all files to eliminate the error.
   * Corrected return to current page when doing a saveAll.

o Bugs
   * Can't fix this for now... seems to be problems with scaling
large muti-line segments of text. For now, best results are
obtained with single lined text elements.

From: Thibault Godouet <fcron@free.fr>
Subject: Fcron 0.9.2 - a replacement for Vixie cron and anacron
Date: Thu, 12 Oct 2000 21:45:25 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

What is new in this release (0.9.2) ?
- -------------------------------------

- - fcron uses autoconf (the configure script).

- - lavg options now works on every systems defining a getloadavg() function,
and fcron handles correctly the case of a serial and lavg job.

- - fcron runs under a specific user's rights for security reasons.

- - user can define if a job should be able to run several times
simultaneously thanks to the option exesev, and if a job can be put
several times simultaneously in the serial queue thanks to the option
   serialonce.

What is fcron ?
- ---------------

Fcron is a scheduler. It aims at replacing Vixie Cron, so it implements
most of its functionalities.

But contrary to Vixie Cron, fcron does not need your system to be up
7 days a week, 24 hours a day : it also works well with systems which
are not running neither all the time nor regularly (contrary to
anacrontab).

To do so, fcron allows you to use the standard mode in which you tell
it to execute one command at a given date and hour and to make it run
a command according to its time of execution, which is normally the same
as system up time. For example :

Run the task 'save /home/ directory'
every 3h15 of system up time.

and, of course, in order to make it really useful, the time remaining
until next execution is saved each time the system is stopped.

You can also say :

run that command once between 2am and 5am

which will be done if the system is running at any time in this
interval. Or even :

run this job once every week as soon as the 15 minutes
load average is lower than 0.9

Fcron also includes a useful system of options, which can be applied
either to every lines following the declaration or to a single line.
Some of the supported options permit to: run jobs one by one, run jobs
at fcron's startup if they should have been run during system down time,
a better management of the mailing of outputs, set a nice value for a
job ...

What is planed for next releases ?
- ----------------------------------

I'd like to :
- - allow users to have several fcrontabs.
(I wonder if it is really necessary : what do you think
about it ? Please mail me answers at fcron@free.fr )
- - allow users to control their running jobs (renice, stop,
   continue ...)

(propositions and help are welcome)

How you can help me
- -------------------

I especially need help for testing every fcron functionalities.
If you'd like to help me, please contact me at :
                fcron@free.fr

Where can I get it ?
- --------------------

You can either go to the project home page at :

http://fcron.free.fr

or get it from metalab at

ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/daemons/cron/fcron-0.9.2.src.tar.gz

(I've sent the file but it may take some time before it is available on
metalab)

I hope you will enjoy it,

Thibault.

Subject: Root kit detection: checkps 1.3-pre1 release
Date: Thu, 12 Oct 2000 21:50:02 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

So, you think a script kiddie might have installed a root kit. IF so then
checkps could eb for you... If ps fails to list a process then it will tell
you all about it and it's relatively. This dgoes far enough to give you a
service that was probably cracked and IP source numbers (for currently
connected boxen).

In a few ticks it should also dtect rootkit bersions of netstat on linux. Much
of the code could be used to good effect on other systems. Any helpers willing
to do the rest? The latest version is 1.3-pre1 and a major update to version
1.2 and minor update to the version with a bug removed announced on bugtraq a
long time ago.

You can run it in the background and get it to check every 5 mibutes, under
any name other than checkps, with any fake argumnet list. You know what will
blend into the abckgorund on your system (the default is httpd with no
argumnets_/

The current version with kill scnaning enbaled should detect all current linux
root kits, even the module one I am aware of. Pure software root kits show up
like sure thumbs as far as the program is concerned.

You can collect copies from sourceforge (the checkps project) or, by http
only, from http://checkps.alcom.co.uk. Minor releases will be reported on the
checkps-support list only.

P.S. If anyone knows of any "competition" then please tell me. tripwire,
logcheck, etc are complementry and checkps is not a replacement or substitute
for them.
