Subject: new issue of the Linux-Ecology-HOWTO

Hi,

a new issue of the Ecology-HOWTO is available. The HOWTO discusses ways
Linux computers can be used as a means to protect our environment, by using
its features to save power or paper. Since it does not require big hardware,
Linux may be used with old computers to make their life cycle longer. Games
may be used in environmental education and software is available to simulate
ecological processes.

Subject: Linux Gazette address change to www.linuxgazette.net
From: Karl-Heinz Herrmann <kh1@khherrmann.de>

The Linux Gazette , which was hosted at www.linuxgazette.com for
issues up to #95 (Oct. 2003) has *moved to a new address*:

################################################################
"The Linux Gazette" as of Nov 2003 is hosted at:
                http://www.linuxgazette.net/
################################################################

This address change was thought necessary by the volunteers running
"The Linux Gazette" when the former host, ssc.com, decided to change the
edited and periodical web-publication "The Linux Gazette" into an
unedited CMS driven system.

This change to a CMS driven system has happened on
www.linuxgazette.com before the Nov 2003 edition, #96. The *.com
domain still runs under the name "The Linux Gazette" and posted an
issue #96 which is different from the #96 published on
http://www.linuxgazette.net/ which causes some confusion which
hopefully can be resolved soon between the authors and ssc.com.

"The Linux Gazette" which has been published formerly on the *.com
address is now moved entirely, including the archives of old issues,
to http://www.linuxgazette.net/

For more details on why the authors of "The Linux Gazette" decided to
leave ssc.com please see:
http://linuxgazette.net/issue96/reborn.html

All E-mail adresses have also changed to the *.net domain:
http://linuxgazette.net/contact.html

The mirroring sites are asked to consider changing their mirroring
scripts to the *.net domain.

Freedom Technology Center To Open With Classes on Email
Security, Linux Administration

The Freedom Technology Center, a new IT training facility in
Mountain View, California, will open on Saturday, November
22nd with a free one-day class on email security, entitled
"Protecting email users from viruses, spam, and other threats."

The second and third scheduled classes at the center cover the
material for the Linux Professional Institute's LPI 101 and
LPI 102 certification exams. The LPI 101 class is scheduled
for December 1-5, and the LPI 102 class is scheduled for
December 8-12.

Enrollment is strictly limited to 12 students per class.

The instructor for all three classes, Jim Dennis, has conducted
Linux training for firms including Motorola, SGI, Cadence,
Wells Fargo, and DTT. He is the co-author of Linux System
Administration (New Riders, 2000) and numerous magazine and
web articles.

"If you spend one day covering the latest software and
filtering approaches, you can really lock out the majority
of spam and virus threats," Dennis said. "I cover what works
and what doesn't."

The class is intended for full or part-time system
administrators who are responsible for the function and security
of email for a small company or group.

Whether or not you use an Open Source mail server internally,
the filtering techniques covered can keep users safe from
email-based attacks, and it is possible to do so without
upgrading or reconfiguring the existing mail server or mail
clients.

In the LPI classes beginning in December, the topics to be
covered include everything from installation and command
basics to network administration, security, and advanced
troubleshooting.

The Freedom Technology Center is located in the heart of
downtown Mountain View, California, and is convenient to
Caltrain, VTA light rail, and US 101.

To enroll in a class or subscribe to the Freedom Technology
Center announcements mailing list, visit the web site at
freedomtechnologycenter.org.

From: Erick Gallesio <eg_@_unice.fr>
Subject: Announce: STklos 0.56 - a Scheme compiler/interpreter
Date: Sun, 23 Nov 2003 21:50:54 CST
Reply-To: eg@wanadoo.fr, --@wanadoo.fr, at@wanadoo.fr, --@wanadoo.fr,

STklos is a free Scheme System (nearly) conform to R5RS. The aim of this
implementation is to be fast as well as light. The implementation is based
on an ad-hoc Virtual Machine. STklos can also be compiled as a library, so
that one can easily embed it in an application.

The salient points of STklos are:
      * efficient and powerful object system based on CLOS providing
          - Multiple Inheritance,
          - Generic Functions,
          - Multi-methods
          - an efficient MOP (Meta Object Protocol)
      * a simple to use module system
      * implements the full tower of numbers defined in R5RS * easy
connection to the GTK+ toolkit * Perl compatible regular expressions
thanks to the PCRE package. * tail recursive calls are properly
      implemented

Changes in this release:
        * The reader recognizes now the DSSL keywords #!rest,
          #!optional and #!key
        * New implemented SRFIs: 27 (random), 38 (external
representation of shared structures) and 39 (parameter objects)
        * New parameter: REAL-PRECISION allow to change the precision
used when displaying a real number
        * New primitives: HOSTNAME, REGEXP-QUOTE, MAKE-PATH,
          FILE-SEPARATOR, HASH-TABLE-UPDATE!, DATE,
          {READ,WRITE}-WITH-SHARED-STRUCTURE
        * Bug corrections

Supported SRFIs: 0, 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, 14, 22, 23, 27
           28, 30, 31, 38, 39
