But without the patch (or something similar), parts of a message may get
lost. Example, if someone sends a message that looks like this:

"http://www.example.org/ <-- Check out this website!"

The RichText window reads "<--" as the beginning of an HTML tag and tries
to interpret it. Since it doesn't find a closing bracket, it thinks the
entire remaining of the message is part of the HTML tag and it doesn't
display anything, since it does not know that tag.  :-(

How about just interpreting those tags that AIM sends out (<a>, <b>, <u>,
<i> and <font> i think)?
