Settings... -> Configure Kate... -> Application -> Document List
The drop-down box labelled 'Sort by:' defaults to 'Opening order'. If this is changed \
to to, say, 'Url', the 'Apply' button at the bottom of the config dialog doesn't \
become active and if 'Ok' is clicked, the change is neither made nor saved. \
