I'm not really sure if this is the same behaviour that I observed on my
machine. It wasn't as dramatic, but maybe it's just that my machine is fast
enough (AMD Athlon64 X2 6000+; 4GB; 2.6.34; GF9500GT + 256.25).

Routinely, but not usually already after a few minutes, my kwin started to drag
the system down. It only caused ~20% load then, but this slowed down the GUI
noticeably. One factor that seemed to trigger it was the use of mplayer (HEAD;
VPAU?). Turning compositing off didn't help here either (IIRC), but restarting
kwin did -- at least for a while: kwin --replace.

What ultimately seems to have "fixed" it for me was the setting under Desktop
Effects->Advanced->Keep window thumbnails: Never. (Don't remember which of the
other two options I had before.)
