Do you have a backtrace in /var/log/kdm.log?
Random "i went away and hours later X has crashed" could refer to a memleak in 
X11 (or even one of its clients) - consider watching top & xrestop.

Nevertheless, clients _can_ perform invalid requests and as konsequence even 
crash themself, but not the server... in theory =)
