you can get plasma out of the way for testing
"kquitapp plasma-desktop"
and later restart it
"plasma-desktop"

But it also acquires some memory - so the problem may be delayed.

Nevertheless this could be some memleak.
Can you watch RAM with top (press "shift+m" to sort by memory) and Pixmap
allocation (VRAM) with "xrestop" during your desktop journey?
