How can we use SMS to send J2ME applications to a mobile device.

We know at a high level how this would work and are looking for details of
the binary SMS content we need to send to the USER AGENT on the mobile
device.

Any pointers are highly appreciated.

Symbian includes support for PersonalJava, which is basically a
stripped-down version of Java 1.1.6. It has JNI capabilities, and some
phones also include support for the JavaPhone APIs which give you access to
the contact database, phone number, and other information.

PersonalJava is not J2ME, though. Newer phones are starting to support
J2ME, or more specifically the Mobile Information Device Profile. Some
phones support both PersonalJava and MIDP, some support only MIDP. Depends
really on how much memory and processor power is available on the device --
PersonalJava requires a lot more horsepower.

Just because a device supports Bluetooth, however, doesn't mean that the
Bluetooth functionality is available from Java, because you still need APIs
to access that functionality. A set of APIs has been defined, but few
devices have implemented them yet.

There are some sample book chapters on http://www.j2medeveloper.com that
will explain most of this.

Eric
